LANCASTER, TX – An argument over the score at a youth football game earlier in August turned deadly after authorities say a 43-year-old coach was fatally shot amid a physical confrontation which broke out due to the argument.

On August 13th, at approximately 8:50 p.m., a youth football game taking place at the Lancaster Community Park descended into chaos over an argument between the teams’ coaches and respective crews over various calls made by the referees.

According to the Lancaster Police Department, “During the disagreement, the opposing coach staff were involved in a physical altercation, and one of the individuals involved in the altercation discharged a firearm striking one adult male.”

Authorities identified the man killed as 43-year-old coach Michael Hickmon, with the alleged gunman being identified as 39-year-old Yaqub Salik Talib.

Video from the incident shows the moments when things turned into a chaotic brawl between the coaching staff of the opposing teams. Shortly after the brawl broke out, five gunshots could be heard emanating from within the fracas.

Talib, who is the brother of retired NFL cornerback Aqib Talib, reportedly turned himself in to authorities on August 15th after a warrant was issued for his arrest under suspicion of first-degree murder.

Clark Birdsall, the attorney representing Talib, issued a statement suggesting that his client intends to justify his actions, saying, “Mr. Talib regrets the tragic loss of life but turned himself into the law so he could tell his side of the story.”

The alleged murderer’s attorney didn’t go into specifics as to what kind of reasoning Talib could have in gunning down the youth football coach, only mentioning that “there are some defensive issues, and Yaqub Talib looks forward to being able to have his day in court.”

Apparently, the retired NFL player was also present during the incident but was reportedly not involved in either the physical confrontation or shooting.

Frank Perez, Aqib Tablib’s attorney, issued a statement expressing condolences for the victim’s family while also coming to the defense of the murder suspect, stating, “Aqib Talib was present when this unfortunate incident occurred and is very distraught and devastated over this terrible loss of life. He would like to convey his condolences to the family of the victim and to everyone who witnessed this unfortunate tragedy. It’s unfair to pass judgment before a full investigation has taken place. I believe once all the witnesses are interviewed, there will be a different perspective as to what happened this past Saturday.”

Ciciely Hickmon, the victim’s brother, issued a statement in the wake of the incident, noting, “Mike was an amazing husband, son, father, grandfather, brother, friend, and coach. Our family is grieving. Right now, we don’t see an end to our grief. We miss him immensely. We always will. We will love him forever.”
